Insulation board

Thermoboard

A closed-cell PIR board for flat roofs, floors and walls. The same thermal protection in a thinner layer — so the roof is lower, lighter and needs fewer fasteners.

Thermoboard insulation boards

Purpose and thermal protection

Thermoboard insulation boards are a modern and highly effective solution for the thermal insulation of all kinds of buildings. They are made of polyisocyanurate (PIR), a material known for its exceptionally low thermal conductivity and excellent insulating properties. They are used to insulate roofs, floors and walls, in industrial and commercial buildings as well as in housing and other structures where energy efficiency, durability and the reliability of the insulation system matter particularly.

Thanks to their high thermal insulation performance, Thermoboard boards achieve excellent thermal protection with a relatively thin layer of insulation. In this way they help reduce heat loss through the winter, and also the overheating of interior spaces through the summer. The result is a more comfortable indoor climate and lower energy consumption for heating and cooling the building.

Strength, stability and build

Besides excellent thermal insulation, Thermoboard boards are distinguished by high compressive strength, which makes them suitable for applications where the insulating material is exposed to greater mechanical loads. Their dimensional and long-term stability allows the boards to keep their properties and their shape over a long period, which secures the reliability of the insulation system as a whole.

A particular advantage is the structure of the PIR core, which practically does not absorb water. Thermoboard boards are faced on both sides with aluminium foil, which further protects the core and helps preserve the thermal insulation characteristics of the material. Thanks to that build, the boards retain their insulating properties considerably longer than many other insulation materials of similar purpose.

Jointing and installation

Efficient jointing of the boards makes it possible to form a continuous layer of insulation properly, which reduces the chance of thermal bridges forming. At the same time the low weight, easy working and quick laying make handling on site easier and shorten the time needed for installation. That brings further savings through simpler and faster execution of the work.

The combination of exceptional thermal insulation characteristics, compressive strength, resistance to moisture, fire performance, long life and easy installation makes Thermoboard a dependable choice for modern building systems and for structures of every purpose.

The flat roof

The insulation system for flat roofs

Thermoboard is not a roof on its own but a layer in a system. This is the order in which that system is built up.

To look at a layer more closely, move the mouse over its name — the video will stop on it.

Why PIR

Four properties that decide it

01

Very low thermal conductivity

λ = 0.021 – 0.026 W/mK. A closed cell structure means the same protection is reached with a thinner layer than with other insulation.

02

Minimal water absorption

The board does not absorb water, so it does not lose its insulating properties over time — not even when the roof is exposed to wet weather during the works.

03

High compressive strength

A dimensionally stable, load-bearing base: the roof can be walked on, and the membrane has something to lie on without dishing.

04

No burning droplets

In a fire PIR does not produce burning droplets. Where the design calls for more, a combined system with mineral wool underneath is used.

Thinner layer of insulation for the same protection — a lower roof build-up
Lighter roof, so the load-bearing structure can be optimised
Fewer mechanical fasteners, and with them fewer penetrations through the insulation

Fixing

What most often goes wrong

  • Where the membrane is mechanically fixed through all the layers down to the load-bearing sheet, fixing the boards separately is not required — the membrane and its fasteners hold the insulation at the same time.
  • Separate fixing is required where the membrane is bonded, where the system is combined (wool + PIR), or where the design documents call for it.
  • The number and layout of the fasteners follow from the wind uplift calculation and differ by roof zone — there are more of them in the edge and corner zones than in the field.
  • The minimum pitch is 1° for mechanically fixed systems, or 2° where enhanced drainage is required. Standing water must be resolved by the design.
