The finishing details of roof and façade

Flashings

A flashing is a folded sheet that closes the place where the roof ends — the verge, the junction with a wall, the ridge or the edge towards the gutter. At those places the water does not fall straight down; the wind drives it at an angle, so it finds every opening left for it. That is why a flashing is not decoration but the last layer of protection — it is folded from the same sheet coated on both sides as the covering, in the same RAL shade, so the line of the roof is nowhere broken.

The four that cover most of the work

Each of them solves one place on the roof. All are made of the same sheet and in the same colour, so on the building you cannot see where one ends and the next begins.

Barge board

Barge board

It goes on the verge of the roof, along the gable, where the covering ends. It keeps the wind from getting under the covering and starting to lift it, and it closes the ends of the battens and the timber substructure against moisture and birds.

Eaves trim

It is fitted at the lower edge of the roof plane, under the covering, and leads the water into the gutter. Without it the water drips behind the gutter — down the fascia and over the façade.

Wall flashing

It closes the junction of the roof plane and a wall — at a chimney, an upstand or an adjoining building. Its upper edge is let into the wall or covered by a counter flashing; its lower edge lies over the covering.

Ridge cap

It covers the ridge — the meeting of two roof planes at the top. It closes it against rain and snow driven at an angle by the wind, and gives the roof a clean finishing line.

Colour

Made in the colour of the roof, not beside it

A flashing is not chosen from a separate catalogue: it is folded from the same sheet coated on both sides as the covering or the façade cladding, and supplied in the same RAL shade. The coating is stoved polyester over a layer of zinc and is applied to the sheet before folding, so even a folded edge stays protected and the colour does not fade in the sun. When the shade is the same, the flashing does not read as an addition but as the finish of the roof line.

Lengths, angles and developed widths are made to suit the building. Give us the shade by RAL number, or send a sample of the sheet already on the roof.
